Patient Information: Clinical Services

Comprehensive Epilepsy Program (CEP)

Introduction to the CEP

Epilepsy patient care at Austin Health is provided through a comprehensive program of Outpatient and Inpatient services, collectively called the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program (CEP). Outpatient services include a First Seizure Clinic for rapid diagnosis and treatment of new onset seizures, and an Epilepsy Clinic for ongoing care of patients with established epilepsy.

The CEP at Austin Health is one of the leading international epilepsy centres. Established in 1978, it was the first such centre to be created in Australia. Our multi-disciplinary team provides internationally-leading patient care, integrated with research. Staff include adult and paediatric neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine specialists, psychiatrists, nurses, EEG technicians, neurophysiologists, researchers, and administrative staff.

We assess and treat people with new onset epilepsy, and people with established epilepsy. We have special facilities for both adults and children. We are pleased to be part of the Victorian Epilepsy Centres (Alfred Hospital, Austin Health, Monash Medical Centre, Royal Children’s Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and St Vincents Hospital) and the Children’s Epilepsy Program

What’s involved

This will vary from patient to patient, and the outpatient clinic being attended or reasons for inpatient admission. We try to minimize the time in hospital so your tests will be streamlined by our staff and some may be organised for you as an outpatient.

Personal account

One patient’s personal account of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Austin Health was eloquently described at the 2007 meeting of the International Brain Research Organisation in Melbourne and has kindly been made available for you to read on this website.

Rugby league legend Wally Lewis was treated successfully through our comprehensive epilepsy program. Wally describes his life with epilepsy in his book “Out of the shadows: A champion’s return to the spotlight” (Harper Collins, Sydney, 2009).
