2006Clive and Vera Ramaciotti Foundation Medal awarded for Excellence in Biomedical Research.
2006Royal Society of Victoria Research Medal for 2006 awarded for Scientific Research in Human Health or Medical Sciences (Human).
2006Curtin Medal for 2005 For outstanding contribution to Australian Medical Science.
2005Zulch Prize for Basic Neurological Research. This award from the Max Planck Society, Germany recognises outstanding achievements in the field of basic neurology research.
2005Ambassador for Epilepsy This title was bestowed by the Joint executive of the International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy.

2002Eccles Lecturer of the Australian Neuroscience Society and the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia. This lectureship is awarded to a neuroscientist to communicate with both laboratory-based neuroscientists and clinicians on a topic of interest.
2002Distinguished Scientist Award of the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre.
2002GlaxoSmithKline Australia Award for Research Excellence. This award is for distinguished discovery and its demonstrated or potential use in the field of human health, provided the work is carried out mainly in Australia.
2001Novartis Prize for Epilepsy Research. This international award is in recognition of outstanding research in the field of epilepsy over the preceding period of four years.
2000Peter Bladin Prize of the Epilepsy Society of Australia. Inaugural award of the Society for major contributions to the field of Epilepsy.
1997Selwyn-Smith Medical Research Prize of the University of Melbourne. This award is given every three years to the candidate who submits a record of original research which is judged to have made the most important contribution to medicine during the previous three years.
1995Epilepsy Research Recognition Award for the American Epilepsy Society. This is the major award of the Society "for work that holds important promise for the improved understanding, diagnosis and treatment of childhood-onset epilepsy". The award citation emphasized contributions to the genetics of epilepsy, especially the identification of the first specific molecular defect in an idiopathic epilepsy.
1993Eric Susman Prize of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for the best contribution, as adjudged by the Council of the College, by a Fellow to the knowledge of any branch of internal medicine.
1987Honourable Mention in the Weir Mitchell Award of the American Academy of Neurology for a manuscript entitled "Myoclonus epilepsy and ragged-red fibers."
